A minor for a day-   Tour of the Svea mine and the surroundings of Svea

As the name suggests the mine that was settled in the front of Van Mijenfjorden was started by the Swedes in 1917. In 1921the Swedish state went is as the owner, and the company was renamed Svenska Stenaktiebolaget. They let down the operation in 1925 after a fire, and in 1934 the Svea mine was purchased by Store Norske Spitsbergen Coal Company AS with the Norwegian government as guarantor. The mine was one of the northernmost operational mining community until the spring of 2016. The mine is one of the most advanced mines in the world and will definitely give you a new perspective of nature in combination with the industrial aspect.

Our guide, a real miner will meet you at the scooter parking in Svea. Then the journey continues to visit's Lompen where you will be given a lomp overall and necessary safety equipment (O2 box, helmet, etc.), then you get a thorough safety training and information of the procedures in Svea. Then we are   ready to enter the big black hole. We will go into the mountains in the same way as miners (in car). On this tour we will visit the stope, watch a convoy and stacks. We will get a thorough grounding in modern coal mining, on our way we will also visit the fabled stope, look at the big mining machines and visit Fletcherriggen. Along the way we stop for lunch, a delicious soup in the break room of the miners. When the stomach is full, and the head is full of mining stories we will head back to Lompen for changing clothes, and unfortunately is time to say goodbye to our mine guide.

Important information: Participants must be in good physical shape and in good health, besides not possessing claustrophobia to implement Svea Svalbard Mine Site Tour at 2 and 4 hours. Participant must be at least 14 years and could go over rough terrain at least 5 km.

 

Svea in a nutshell- from ancient history to today’s Svea

Guided tour walking and or mini bus in the outdoor areas of Svea. Our local guide will meet you in the “messa” for a safety training. Then we head to our first stop which is the cultural heritage of Svea former 'time with Swedish owners. On this trip you will witness a former industrial community, majestic scenery and it will definitely give you a new perspective on nature in combination with the industrial aspect. You'll leave Svea with new lessons about Svalbard mining history and its importance for Longyearbyen, Norway's presence on Svalbard.

Svea mine- experience the big black hole

On this trip we will experience a lot of the same as on the 4 hours trip. We will however not have time to visit all the places inside the mine. The mining guide will take you either to the stope, cm, mb or Fletcherriggen (this is determined by the nature of the activity that is in the mine of the current day).

Svea City- tour

Svea is a complex industrial society that have previously been closed for the public. On this tour you will get a tour of Svea center, you'll get an idea of ​​how a normal everyday precursor of a miner. We will visit some of the buildings in downtown like messa, lompen and the saloon, and not least you will get a mandatory safety training, so that one can move around the Svea center.
